Ravens Start HCAC Championships in Third, Scheffer Earns Record Finish

The Anderson University men's swimming and diving team started the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Championships in third place after Day 1 in Terre Haute.

Anderson has turned in 85 points and holds a 16-point lead on Hanover College for third.

Noah Scheffer charged to third in the 50-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 21.52 seconds. The freshman from Lambertville, Mich. turned in the first top-three individual finish in the HCAC Championships in Anderson swimming and diving history. Scheffer smashed his previous school record by 0.53 seconds. He placed sixth (21.52) in the 50-freestyle prelims.

The Ravens fielded a 200-freestyle relay of Bryce Holt, Josh Ekberg, Evan Kropf and Scheffer, which took third with a time of 1 minute, 28.91 seconds. Anderson also put together a 400 medley relay of Holt, Ekberg, Scheffer and Kropf, which also secured third (3:35.10).

Ekberg captured ninth (2:04.17) in the 200-individual-medley prelims and eighth (2:02.83) in the 200-individual-medley finals.

The Ravens put together a 200-freestyle relay of Alex Cubellis, Wil Lashbrook, David Lange and Andrew Taflinger, which locked up ninth (1:33.17). Anderson also fielded a 400-medley relay of Cubellis, Lange, Kris Keller and Taflinger, which came in ninth (3:47.64).

Kropf raced to 11th (22.94) in the 50-freestyle prelims and 11th (22.71) in the 50-freestyle finals.

Keller claimed 12th (5:14.19) in the 500-freestyle prelims and 11th (5:08.55) in the 500-freestyle finals.

Franklin College holds a slight lead for first in the conference standings with 215 points after Day 1. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (195) currently sits in second, ahead of Anderson (85), Hanover (69), Transylvania University (57) and Manchester University (5), which rounds out the current team standings.

The Ravens begin Day 2 of the HCAC Championships on Friday at 10 a.m.
