Anderson University men's track and field senior Michael Sweigart broke the school weight throw record during Saturday's Polar Bear Final Qualifier in Ada, Ohio.
Sweigart captured first place in the weight throw with a mark of 19.55 meters (64 feet, 1.75 inches). The Alexandria native broke the previous school record of 19.48 meters set by 2006 graduate Dwayne Lockridge. Sweigart also broke the Polar Bear Final Qualifier meet record. He currently ranks sixth in NCAA D-III in the weight throw.
In the shot put, Sweigart recorded a distance of 14.36 meters (47 feet, 1.5 inches).
"Michael looked really good [on Saturday]," Coach Nic Huffman said. "I'm glad to see him get the indoor weight throw record. He has had that goal in his sights for four years and worked every day to get there. He deserves it and I'm proud of what he has been able to accomplish. I still think he can throw farther next week. His peaking process is working. We have a work trip to New York next week for the NCAA Indoor Championships and want to come back with some hardware."
Sweigart competes in the weight throw of the NCAA D-III Indoor Championships on Friday, March 14 at 10 a.m. in Rochester, N.Y. at Golisano Training Center.
