AU, Coach Rock Pick Up First Win
September 22, 2018
Anderson outscored Defiance 12-0 in the second half to pick up a come-from-behind 18-14 victory over the Yellow Jackets at Coressel Stadium in Defiance, Ohio, Saturday.
It was the Ravens first win of the season and first win for new head coach Steve Rock.
"I'm very happy for this team to earn their first victory of the season today," said Rock. "They have worked hard trying to live up to the standards that we, as a coaching staff, have set for them."
AU got out to a 6-0 lead, scoring on a 4-yard run from Johnny Ovalle.
Defiance scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and led until the Ravens added two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Reggie Lipscomb scored on a 4-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed. AU trailed 14-12 until Travis McGuire connected with Alex Barnett on a 34-yard score with 9:53 remaining in the game.
"We started strong early but hit some rough patches late in the first quarter and into the second," said Rock. "We came out in the second half and played very strong on defense and special teams. It gave our offense some time to correct some things and figure out what would work to get the lead back."
Off the bench, McGuire went 6-for-8 for 65 yards and one touchdown. Lipscomb rushed for 98 yard on 21 carries. Charles Keith had two interceptions and Noah Mann was credited for a team-high 10 tackles.
AU is 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Defiance dropped to 0-4 and 0-2 in the HCAC.
AU welcomes Hanover for Homecoming Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. In the AU Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony in the morning, the undefeated 1993 team will be inducted. All Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at halftime of the football game.
