Fightin’ Engineers Eliminate Ravens from HCAC Tournament in Double Overtime
The fifth-seeded Anderson University women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 double-overtime heartbreaker to fourth-seeded Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology during the Opening Round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament on Saturday in Terre Haute.

During the 25th minute, Rose-Hulman's Lauren Marquardt crossed a pass to Kira Hicks and Hicks's shot went just left. After a Rose-Hulman misplay in the 34th minute, Anhely Montes created a counterattack, but her shot was just left. Paige Tomallo added a shot in the 36th minute. In the final minute of the first half, Montes fired a shot that hit the crossbar and the ricochet downward just missed crossing the goal-scoring line.
During the 55th minute, Bekah Blair delivered a corner kick for the Ravens. Rose-Hulman attempted to clear the ball, but Blair recovered the loose ball. Blair served a cross to setup a header by Kylie Roberts, but the shot went just right.
Emily Wilusz drove up the field in the 59th minute. She dumped off a pass near the right corner to Riley Schultz who produced a goal to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. Wilusz received the assist.
During the 69th minute, Hicks put a shot on goal. Katie Choi rebounded the shot and was fouled in the box, drawing a penalty kick for Rose-Hulman. Hicks's first attempt at the penalty kick was saved, but Rose-Hulman earned a retry after an Anderson violation. Hicks converted her second attempt to tie the game at 1-1.
Hannah Thompson was awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out after drawing a foul in the 73rd minute. She took the shot directly off the free kick, but Lily Dore came up with the save.
During the 80th minute, Mandy Williams found an opening to rip a shot from about 20 yards out, but Dore made a jumping one-handed swat save.
Marquardt broke away in the 85th minute with an almost 1-on-1 situation, but Hannah Caes came in just in time to block Marquardt's shot. Hicks also had a shot blocked in the box with less than three minutes of regulation. Entering overtime, the two teams were tied 1-1.
Kennedy Hurst deflected a pass left of the goal in the 93rd minute. In the 96th minute, Hicks found an open Kiana Martin to the left of the box. Martin fired the shot, but it was saved by Adrienne Weyers. Hicks created a 1-on1 opportunity in the 99th minute, but Hick's shot went just right of the goal.
The match which was consistently filled with rain started seeing heavy downpours in stretches of the second overtime.
In the 102nd minute, Marquardt took a corner kick. Hicks managed to head her corner kick for her second goal of the game, putting the Fightin' Engineers ahead 2-1. Rose-Hulman kept Anderson off the board for the remainder of the contest.
The Fightin' Engineers outshot Anderson 25-15 and held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Schultz scored on her only shot while Wilusz dished out an assist. Montes led the Ravens with four shots. Blair and Thompson each put together two shots and one shot on goal. Tomallo and Williams each put their only shot on frame. Roberts and Hurst contributed two shots apiece. Weyers saved eight of the 10 shots she faced.
Hicks notched two goals, 10 shots and four shots on goal. Marquardt tallied an assist, four shots and one shot on goal. Martin produced three shots and two shots on goal while Choi turned in two shots and one shot on goal. Ally Smith recorded two shots and one shot on goal. Ella Johnson put her only shot on target. Stacia Brooks turned in two shots while Camille Clark added a shot. Dore saved four of the five shots she faced.
