Coach Jonathan Coddington secured the first win of his career with the win.
The Yeomen (0-2) scored on the opening drive of the game as Drew Nye completed a 59-yard pass to Connor Steele. Oberlin's 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, keeping the game at 6-0.
The score remained 6-0 for a majority of the contest. With 5 minutes, 51 seconds left in the third quarter, Zac Montgomery rushed in for a 15-yard touchdown and put Anderson (1-1). The extra-point by Corey Layton gave the Ravens a 7-6 lead.
With 9:11 in the fourth quarter, Carson Brookbank turned in a 4-yard rushing touchdown. Layton converted an extra point to give Anderson a 14-6 lead. The capper came with 2:03 remaining as Zaire Prioleau picked off a pass and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown.
"I was very proud of our team," Coach Jonathan Coddington said. "We knew that we were facing a tough and well-coached team in Oberlin. The challenge for our team was to be the tougher team for four quarters and our guys did just that. Battling adversity throughout the first half and with the heat all game, our guys stepped up in a lot of big ways and supported each other all day long."
The Ravens posted eight sacks on the day. Raven of the Game Sidiki Traore notched a whopping four sacks to lead the Ravens. The sophomore from Pendleton also tallied six tackles, four tackles for loss, 20 sack yards and 20 tackle-for-loss yards. Johnathen Hayworth-Dupree recorded a sack, a tackle for a loss, 11 sack yards and 11 tackle-for-loss yards. Elijah Hurns contributed a sack, a tackle for a loss and seven sack yards. Connor Huffman finished the day with a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Jake Simpson contributed a sack and a tackle for loss. Derrius Grimes, Zaire Prioleau and Christian Hollins each recorded tackles for losses.
Anderson created three turnovers. Prioleau recorded an 85-yard pick 6. Hurns picked off a pass and returned it for 51 yards. Simpson also forced a fumble, recovered the fumble and returned it for 32 yards.
"The defense did a great job getting to the quarterback, totaling eight sacks and many more pressures along with forcing a couple of turnovers."
Simpson and Huffman shared the team lead with seven tackles apiece. Rickey Bell and Traore provided six tackles apiece while Hurns added five tackles. Simpson also contributed a quarterback hurry. Prioleau broke up two passes while Huffman, C.L. Siler, Hayworth-Dupree, Darrion Alexander and R.J. Swain each tallied pass break ups.
The Yeomen edged the Ravens 268-257 on total offense, but Anderson powered to 200 rushing yards. Anderson had five different players rush for at least 20 yards. Marquane Taylor paced the rushing attack with 55 yards. Montgomery recorded 40 rushing yards, Brookbank rushed for 31 yards, Travis Moon totaled 24 rushing yards and Gabe McGuire contributed 22 rushing yards.
"Offensively, we got the run game going and we did a good job up front, winning the line of scrimmage."
Layton went 2-for-3 (66.7 percent) on extra-point attempts. Tone Hurd returned a kickoff for 27 yards.
Anderson faces off with Calvin University (1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Middle School.
"We are excited to get back to work and prepare for our home opener against Calvin. This will be another good team and a good opportunity to show our continued development as a team."
