Bill Ameredes - 1998 Athlete

When Anderson University played its first football game in 1947, it called on Bill Ameredes to play both offense and defense. He performed so well, coaches decided to continue the practice all four years of his Raven career. And, in 1950, his No. 14 jersey was retired along with four teammates Carter Byfield, Jim Macholtz, Dante Schiavone and Bill Sebree.

The guard was chosen All-Conference three times and All-State three times, including first team in 1950. He climaxed his career by being named co-captain and nominated for Little All-American.

Ameredes contributed broadly to the Raven formative grid years, coming to campus a year out of the U.S. Navy (Guam) and leaving the construction industry in his hometown of Weirton, W.V. After 50 years, he retired in Akron, Ohio, from a career in education, athletics, writing, winning many national art awards, giving leadership to the Akron Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and serving as president of the Asia Minor Hellenic American Society.

After graduation, Ameredes entered the Anderson Public Schools System to coach junior high football, basketball, track and freshman football and basketball at Anderson High School. For two years, he coached at Willkie High School in Elwood. His 36 years on the Ohio education scene began in Tallmadge and included athletic and guidance responsibilities in Cleveland Heights, Medina County and Twinsburg. He served numerous groups in his field as president.

His influence on young people has been felt in many ways. He coached an Indiana champion in the shot put and started two prep charges on their way to All-American status at Notre Dame and Ohio State University.

Anderson University is proud to name Bill N. “Vasso” Ameredes among its second class of inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame.
