After college, he served six years in the US Army National Guard/Reserves as a Staff Sargent and won the AU Distinguished Alumni Award and Boender Award as the outstanding student development officer in 2001.

Baker also served the University for more than 40 years after his graduation. He was the Financial Aid Director, Associate Dean of Students and Dean of Students until his recent retirement.
