Among pioneer teammates Jim Macholtz, Dante Schiavone, Bill Ameredes and Bill Sebree, Carter Byfield is one of the first four-year lettermen in the Anderson University football program. It reflects his valuable contributions to the sport and his interests in athletics in general.

One of hundreds of ex-servicemen who came to campus at the close of World War II he spent 1944-46 in the U.S. Navy Carters contributions to the young gridiron program were recognized by teammates when they chose him at Most Valuable Player in 1948. He was also named All-Conference after the 1948 season.

Byfield was also chosen MVP in track in 1949, a sport in which he held the pole vault record. As in football, Byfield won four letters in track and was an All-Conference selection. He won the 1950 Little State pole vault competition. In campus co-curricular activities, Byfield was co-director of intramural sports and president of the A Club.

His Anderson University athletic prowess was recognized at graduation when he was invited to teach and assist in football, basketball and track at Anderson High School. His 36 years of teaching, coaching and administrative duties were climaxed in his native Indianapolis in 1987. His last 21 years were spent at Pike High School, where he coached swimming and was twice selected as conference Coach of the Year.
