W. Shirell Fox – 1998 Meritorious Service

For nearly four decades, Shirell Fox was known as Mr. Publicity for Anderson University. On becoming Director of Publicity in 1948, he also became the first Sports Information Director. His enthusiasm and devotion for the university was seen and read by local, state, national and international audiences.

For many years, he wrote the pre-game and post-game stories for the Anderson and Indianapolis newspapers. As editor of AC News, he kept alumni and friends informed of significant stories of a young and maturing sports program. For many years, he also traveled with the AU basketball team on road trips – sometimes driving his own car for team members. He also spent several years as scorekeeper for home basketball games.

Fox’s well-documented statistical records continue to be used for reference and historical perspectives. He set the standard for accuracy and consistency.

At the time of his retirement in 1985, Fox was recognized by the academic community as a pacesetter in the field of institutional journalism and public relations. He has been honored by Anderson University with the doctor of laws and has been recognized by both the State of Kentucky and Indiana with their respective highest honors, Kentucky Colonel and Sagamore of the Wabash.

Fox has received numerous honors throughout his career as a community leader and for his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America and Lions Club International.

Fox died of heart failure in 2002 while visiting Anderson.

Anderson University is proud to name W. Shirell Fox among its second class of inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame.
