James Hostetler – 2006 Athlete/Coach

James Hostetler came to Anderson University in the fall of 1970 from New Castle, Ind., to play tennis.

Hostetler earned four letters in tennis as a player from 1970-74 and returned to coach the Ravens for 13 season from 1975-87, compiling a school record 102 win (102-37).

As a player, Hostetler was the HBCC Champion in 1971 as well as NAIA District 21 runner-up at No. 1 singles. He was a three-time All-Conference selection and twice All-District 21 and team MVP. He was also the first Raven to play in the NAIA national meet (1971).

He ranks third on the AU coaching list with four conference Coach of the Year awards (1977, 1982, 1984-85) as well as four HBCC titles (1976-77, 1984-85). He was also a two-time District Coach of the Year.

His teams finished second in the conference four more times and runner-up in the District 21 meet seven times. He was also the District 21 Chairman for eight years and the Site Director for the NAIA National tournament for 12 years. His teams compiled a school-best 103-35 record.

His other coaching credentials include being the swimming coach at Madison Heights, boys and girls tennis coach at Highland High School. His girls tennis team was state runner-up at Highland in 2001 and he coached the girls singles champion in 2002.

Hostetler earned his bachelor’s degree in Math in 1974 and added his master’s degree in Administration from Ball State in 1979.

While at AU, he was active in Dativus Social Club, Sigma Zeta, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and participated in AU’s first bike trip in January term with Bill Isenhour.

In the community, Hostetler has been active at East Side Church of God for more than 30 years and has been the Director of the local tennis tournament for more than 15 years. He has been a teaching in the Anderson school system for more than 30 years and was named the ACS Teacher of the Year in 2002.

Hostetler and his wife Teri reside in Anderson and have two children, Mark and Erin.
