Dr. Robert McCurdy - 1999 Meritorious Service

Dr. Robert McCurdy has known the Anderson University campus intimately most of his life, coming to Anderson with his late parents when they were students at the school. He remained in the city to share a lifelong love in athletics and practice as a physician and surgeon on behalf of countless patients.

Cross country was his main Raven interest, lettering for three years in which he ran with other AU standouts Charles Lusby and Roger Tifford. He is remembered for setting a home course record during Homecoming 1957. He also won two letters in track, all the time being employed full-time off campus.

His interest in running continued after leaving campus, including the Boston Marathon and in many local and statewide races. In 1989, he finished second in the AU Homecoming Run in his age group.

Dr. McCurdy’s participation in Anderson University athletics is further evidenced by his being team physician for 23 years and supporter in the sports medicine program since 1970. He is a prime encourager and fan of his family (Ben and Stephanie), including his wife Naomi, as they particularly excel in tennis.

His parents, the late Rev. Dwight McCurdy and Dr. Bernice McCurdy, also were proud Anderson University alumni.

The widely known surgeon and graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, has followed in his parents’ footsteps in service as a Church of God leader, having been president of the National Missionary Board. He teaches a Sunday School class and has functioned in numerous congregational offices. He is on the Board of Trustees of Community Hospital in Anderson.

Anderson University is proud to name Dr. Robert William McCurdy to its Athletic Hall of Fame.
