Cheryl Poore - 1999 Athlete

Cheryl Poore graduated from Anderson University in 1970 and quickly made a name for herself on the East Coast coaching women’s field hockey.

For more than 30 years she taught at Harwich Middle School and coached at Harwich HS in Harwich, Mass., amassing a 411-52-36 record (through 1999). She won 18 league championships and three sectional titles and coached three players that went on to be All-Americans in college.

She has also coached lacrosse and softball, the latter Harwich record of 240-10 including a dozen league championships and a district title.

“Everything she does during field hockey season is field hockey,” said one of her former players. “Her commitment is incredible. And her heart! She loves the sport and she loves us. And she knows the game. She knows how to produce a team. She knows how to work us hard. Everything she does is for us and to better us.”

While at AU from 1966-70, Poore played on every woman’s athletic team that was in existence – field hockey, volleyball, basketball and badminton. She was captain of the volleyball team for two years and the basketball team once. At the same time, she was also coordinator for women’s athletics and recreation and the president for three years. In 1967, she was elected president of the Athletic and Recreation Federation of Indiana College Women.

Anderson University is proud to name Cheryl M. Poore to its Athletic Hall of Fame.
