Richard Sharp - 2003 Athlete

Richard Sharp was a three-sport athlete and a four-time team MVP at Anderson University from 1963-67.

Sharp came to AU from Sumter, S.C., to play football, wrestle and run track. He was a two-time team MVP in football (1964-65) as well as All-Conference (1965) and All-District (1965), earning four letters. He was named to the 1960s All-Decade in 1997.

He earned three letters in track and wrestling, where he was a two-time team MVP in track as well as All-Conference once. While at Anderson, he set the school record in the 220 meters (21.9) and ran the anchor let of the 440 relay team. He was also a conference champion (discus) and was a member of one conference championship team in track.

When not competing in athletics, Sharp was a member of Sachem, a Resident Assistant and Gym Supervisor and in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities (1965). He earned his master’s degree in Physical Education from Western Kentucky in 1968 and is a certified Real Estate Broker and Specialist.

After college, he was a tight end on the Indianapolis Capitals of the Continental Football League. After his playing career, he coached football and wrestling at Anderson High School and junior high track, football and wrestling at Central Junior High.

He has more recently been a realtor with O.C. Clark and an owner/sales representative at Century 21 Wood, Ross and Sharp. In the community, he is the President of the Anderson Board of Realtors, a past Realtor of the Year, President of Building Traders for Anderson Vocational Schools, director of the Anderson YMCA and member of the Kiwanis Club.

Sharp is also active in his church, teaching Sunday School for 25 years, serving on two boards for Church of God agencies, being on the Building Committee and Pulpit Committee and Chairperson of the church.

Sharp and his wife Donna have a daughter, Susan Marie Sharp.

Anderson University is proud to name Richard W. Sharp to its Athletic Hall of Fame.
