Donald E. Smith - 2003 Athlete

Don Smith didn’t travel far from Anderson High School to play baseball, basketball and golf at Anderson University from 1954-58.

Smith earned 10 letters in those three sports, including four in basketball and two each in baseball and golf. Smith was team captain in both basketball and golf while at AU. He was also named the first recipient of the Anderson Lion’s Club Scholarship in 1954.

On the basketball team, he had the best free throw percentage, led the team in assists and was third on the team in scoring in 1958. That team advanced to the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City, Mo., before falling to eventual national champion Tennessee State.

After earning his master’s degree in Health and PE from Ball State in 1966, he earned a second master’s in Administration from Ball State in 1976.

After college, he has remained in Anderson, holding down the Athletic Director job at Highland High School as well as Dean of Boys and teaching positions in the Anderson Community Schools system over the last 35 years.

Smith has been married to his wife Phyllis for 41 years and has three children.

Anderson University is proud to name Donald E. Smith to its Athletic Hall of Fame.
