Women's Tennis Continues to Move Forward in HCAC Tournament
October 18, 2019
The Anderson University women's tennis team continues to move forward in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament. As the No. 1 seed, Anderson holds a first-round BYE and opens the HCAC Tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
A LOOK AT THE RAVENS
Anderson is currently 13-1 on the season, which is three more wins than the previous school record. The Ravens trailed Transylvania University (6-3, 6-2) by a 2-4 deficit last Saturday, but rattled off three consecutive third-set victories to earn a 5-4 win and clinch the HCAC regular-season title. A loss would have bumped Anderson back to a No. 3 seed.
Katrina Berban (Seguin, Texas/New Braunfels) racked up a 14-0 record at No. 1 singles and put together a 7-0 HCAC record at No. 1 singles. Jordyn Roper (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) has compiled a 12-0 singles record as well as a 6-0 conference record. Anna Creech (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) finished 8-3 at singles and closed out the conference season with a 5-0 record. Claire Miller (Indianapolis, Ind./Homeschool) posted a 12-2 singles record and Jasmine Blair (Clearwater, Fla./Homeschool/Largo) finished with an 11-2 singles record. Allison Newman (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) turned in a 7-6 record for the year at No. 2 singles. Jenna Kuntz (Edinburgh, Ind./Southwestern) provided a 3-1 singles record.
Berban/Blair racked up an 11-2 record for the Ravens at No. 1 doubles. Newman/Miller earned an 8-5 record at No. 2 doubles while Creech/Roper contributed a 9-1 record at No. 3 doubles. Roper/Kuntz finished with a 2-1 record at No. 3 doubles.
The projected No. 1-6 for the Ravens going into the conference tournament is Berban, Newman, Blair, Miller, Roper and Kuntz, respectively. Anderson looks to reaffirm its status as the top team in the conference and will have to do so with a different lineup. Second-seeded Hanover College (8-1, 7-1) has its sights set and taking its third HCAC Tournament title in a row.
"Our goal for this year was to make the top two in the conference standings and we did that," Coach Bryant Beard said. "We will have a different type of challenge going into the conference tournament since we won't be at full strength. We don't feel that we're the team with the target on our backs, despite having the No. 1 seed. Our girls just attack the opportunities in front of them. We think we still have a lot to prove beyond this season."
Top-seeded Anderson is slated to play the winner of the first-round matchup between No. 4 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (7-4, 5-2) and No. 5 Franklin College (5-7, 4-4). The first-round matchup is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. and Anderson will take on the winner on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Anderson has had the entire roster play a vital role in terms of the team's development to establish the success it has so far.
"Looking back on this season, there has been a lot of awards, a lot of records, individual and team, but I am most proud of the growth of every individual on this team for all positions No. 1-13."
A LOOK AT ROSE-HULMAN
Naomi Bhagat provided a 7-3 record at No. 1 singles. Fanny-Jane Banda turned in a 10-1 singles record. Kyla Jarvis and Anna Thompson both compiled singles records of 6-2 while Emma Goodman and Breanna Rogers provided singles records of 5-2. In HCAC action, Banda finished 7-0 on the season while Jarvis closed out 4-0.
Bhagat/Rogers went 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Banda/Thompson put together a 4-3 doubles record and Jarvis/Krista Manche earned a 2-2 doubles record.
A LOOK AT FRANKLIN
Maddie Bright provided a 5-6 record at No. 1 singles. Addie Rund and Sydney Logsdon each posted 505 singles record while Alayna Munson contributed a 5-6 singles record. Sydney Utterback closed out the season 3-7 in singles while Emma Foley went 3-8 in singles.
Bright/Utterbeck put together a 4-5 record at No. 1 doubles. Foley/Rund provided a 5-4 record at No. 3 doubles while Kinley Harmon/Madison Pifer turned in a 4-8 doubles record.
KEYS FOR SUCCESS
The Ravens expect to play smart tennis, not make mistakes and let their opponents make mistakes. They look to be aggressive when it is called for, but not beat themselves with unnecessary mistakes.
"We need to not make things personal and play percentage tennis."
