Ravens Shut Out Eagles
October 11, 2019
The Anderson University women's tennis team shut out Midway University with a 7-0 victory on Friday in Midway, Ky.
Playing under National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) rules, the Ravens (12-1) fought to a 1-0 lead after doubles. Katrina Berban (Seguin, Texas/New Braunfels)/Jasmine Blair (Clearwater, Fla./Homeschool/Largo) (11-1) fought to a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles and Jordyn Roper (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic)/Anna Creech (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) (8-1) turned in a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. Carly Poste/Jessica Keith locked up a 6-1 win for Midway (4-3) at No. 2 doubles.
"[Friday] started very out of character," Coach Bryant Beard said. "It was obvious at the beginning everyone felt out of sorts, but every single player found a way to secure their win. I think that shows that this team has a lot of resilience."
Berban (13-0) picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, Allison Newman (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) (7-5) captured a 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, Blair (11-1) earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, Claire Miller (Indianapolis, Ind./Homeschool) (11-2) grinded out a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 victory at No. 4 singles and Creech (7-3) locked up a 6-2, 0-6, 10-3 win at No. 5 singles. Roper (11-0) won at No. 6 singles by default.
Anderson, which is 6-0 in conference play, has its sights set on clinching a regular-season Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) title with a win against Transylvania University (6-2, 6-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
