Trine Fights Past Anderson

The Anderson University volleyball team faced off against the Trine University Thunder on Wednesday. During the four-set match, the Ravens fell to the Thunder, 19-25, 26-24, 18-25, 22-25.
The Ravens (1-3) kept a close battle through the first several points of the first set against the Thunder (2-4). Anderson took a 2-0 lead to start the set, before Trine tied it up, then took a 6-4 lead over the Ravens. Through the remainder of the first set, the Ravens would fight to keep it close, typically keeping it within two points, before the Thunder were able to run with the lead. The Ravens fell in the first set 18-25.
Set 2 saw the Thunder jump out to a quick and early lead, going up 4-1 against the Ravens. Anderson wasted no time to turn things around and gain back momentum. A kill by Lauren Dungan (Alexandria, Ind. / Alexandria-Monroe) tied the set up 6-6. From there the Thunder once again took the lead before the Ravens bounced back and made it 12 apiece. Both sides would then take turns going back and forth taking the lead and tying it all up. The Ravens got their break starting with an attacking error on the Thunders end to make it 23-23. A service ace for the Ravens then allowed them to take a 24-23. The Thunder then got a kill, brining it to 24-24. Then, an attack error on the Thunder, followed by a kill from Sydney McClain (Urbana, Ohio / Emmanuel Christian Academy) gave the Ravens two points to secure a 26-24 victory in set two.
Trine took control of set three through most of the set. The Ravens were only able to tie it up twice during the set, both early on. A kill by Jimena Montano (Algonquin, Ill. / Harvest Christian Academy) made it 2-2. Montano quickly answered with another kill two point later to make it 3-3. The Thunder then extended their lead, ultimately taking set three 25-18.
The Ravens came out hungry, starting out with another kill for Montano, followed by two attacking errors on the Thunder's end for the Ravens to take a 3-0 lead. Trine then answered with a 5-0 run to make it 3-5. The Ravens and the Thunder then went back and forth, with neither team letting the other get ahead. It was a close battle through the end, but the Thunder were able to break away first, securing a fourth set, 25-22 victory.
Leading the Ravens on the day was Jimena Montano with 16 kills and two block assists. Hannah Rady (Cloverdale, Ind. / Cloverdale) supported the Ravens with 16 assists. Kate Todd (Festus, Mo. / Festus) contributed three service aces, while Sydney McClain led the team with 19 digs. The Ravens had a .149 attack percentage, while the Thunder had a .224.
"I am proud of the fight that we displayed against Trine," Coach Tami Miller said. "After a flat weekend, we rebounded and came out with some new energy. We were simply outplayed by a talented young team. I credit Trine for their defense and offensive power. We will all regroup and work on being more disciplined and being an offensive threat."
Anderson will be back in action on Friday as they head to Cincinnati, Ohio to take part in the Charlie Wrublewdki Invitational hosted by Mount St. Joseph. The Ravens face off against the Quakers of Wilmington College (2-2). Match 1 is set to begin at 6PM. The Ravens will then turn around and play the Spartans of Manchester (3-2) at 8PM.
