Harley, Tallent Rewrite School-Record Books in Shootout
Anderson University football players Tyson Harley (New Palestine, Ind./Mount Vernon) and Zac Tallent (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) both rewrote the single-game school-record book during Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) matchup shootout with Mount St. Joseph University at Macholtz Stadium.
Â
Harley threw for a single-game school-record 512 passing yards, breaking his mark of 479 yards that he set against Franklin College (5-4, 4-2) earlier this season. The freshman from New Palestine also tied the single-game school record of 42 completions set by Joel Steele against Taylor University in 2001.
Â
"Tyson is continuing to make great progress in his first year," Coach Steve Rock said. "It's important for this young offense to learn and trust each other and that trust was built further [on Saturday]. I'm not all surprised that Tyson eclipsed his single-game passing record from earlier this year. Whe he comes out and executes the game plan as given to him by Offensive Coordinator Tim Sanders, the sky's the limit."
Â
Tallent racked up 22 receptions, smashing the single-game school record of 17, set by David Vance in the 2001 Taylor game.
Â
"Zac also had a record-setting day and is a phenomenal leader on the offense. Zac comes to work every day and gives everything he has to get better and to help his team grow. The reality is Zac's best football is ahead of him and a phenomenal effort in the offseason will allow him to be bigger, faster and stronger. Add that to his preparation and leadership and you can see how he will improve."
Â
Mount St. Joseph (7-2, 5-2) won the shootout against the Ravens (3-6, 1-5) in a 76-46 win. The Raven's rolled to a 688-485 advantage against the Lions on offense. Anderson's total offense of 688 is the second-highest single game total in school history, only trailing a 710-yard performance against Franklin in 2003.
Â
"I'm very proud of the way the offense went out and executed. The run game and the pass game were clicking versus a very good team."
Â
The Lions finished the day with 11 touchdowns, including nine offensive touchdowns, a punt-return touchdown and a kick-return touchdown.
Â
"On defense and special teams, we have to find a way to be disciplined in our approach as we miss far too many assignments and are not in the right place because we are not reading keys, so we have to get to the bottom of these problems."
Â
Harley totaled 512 passing yards, five passing touchdowns and finished 42-of-63 passing. Tallent turned in 158 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown to go with his 22 receptions. The Lakeland, Fla. native caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Harley.
Â
James Tucker (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) racked up 148 receiving yards, eight receptions and two receiving touchdowns. The sophomore from Brookville caught touchdowns of 42 yards and 32 yards from Harley.
Â
Reggie Lipscomb (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) notched 160 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns and a rushing 2-point conversion. The sophomore running back from Indianapolis provided rushing scores of seven yards and 10 yards.
Â
Alex Barnett (McCordsville, Ind./Mount Vernon) turned in 91 receiving yards, which includes an 85-yard touchdown reception. Elijah Crowe (Robinson, Ill./Logansport) produced 63 receiving yards, including a 1-handed 23-yard touchdown pass. Griffin Belt (Wheeler, Ind./Wheeler) ran in a 2-point conversion. Chase Fisher (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) averaged 38 yards on two punts and placed one inside the 20.
Â
Charles Keith (Detroit, Mich./Franklin) led the Ravens with seven tackles. Andrew Cochran (Van Buren, Ind./Eastbrook) and Trevon McCall (Riverdale, Ga./Morrow) recorded five tackles apiece. Christian Myers (Newport, Ind./North Vermillion) forced a fumble on a sack. Kourtnei Green (Princeton, Texas/Princeton) broke up two passes while Montravion Staley (Fort Wayne, Ind./Eastside) and Dylan Hepler-Fink (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) added break ups. McCall contributed a quarterback hurry.
Â
With a young squad, the Ravens look to continue to make defensive developments for the future.
Â
"We are very young on the defensive side of the ball, so a very good effort in the offseason in the weightlifting and conditioning program will make for great improvement this time next year."
Â
The Ravens celebrated Senior Day prior to the contest. Anderson recognized cheerleaders Candance Cox, Maddie Hamrin, athletic trainers Kendranne Ford, Taylor Glover, Josh Masner, football players Alphonso Blackwell (Gary, Ind./Merrillville), Fisher, Keith, McCall, Zharquan White (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) and football manager Elliot Murray (Coleman, Mich./Coleman).
Â
"I'm sorry things didn't work out better for the seniors to win on their last home game of their career, but each one of them gave their best and I am thankful that they have stuck with the program through the previous coaching change and help lay the foundation of #TheResurgence."
Â
Anderson clashes with rival Manchester University (3-6, 2-4) in HCAC action for The Bronze Ball next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in North Manchester.
Â
"The team is very excited to head to Manchester next week to finish out the season and do our best to win The Bronze Ball game over Manchester."
