Anderson University women's track and field standout Mariah Murray (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Track Athlete of the Week, which was announced by the conference on Monday.
During last week's Little State Championships, Murray clocked a time of 27.33 seconds in the 200-meter dash, which ranks first in the HCAC. Murray also posted a 100-meter dash time of 13.30 seconds, which currently ranks fourth in the HCAC. The Ravens fielded a 4x100 relay of Krista Franklin (McCordsville, Ind./Mount Vernon), Murray, Victoria Baver (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) and Olivia Moss (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central), which took sixth place with a time of 53.04 seconds.
"I was pretty happy with my performance at the Little State Championships," Murray said. "I was able to focus more on my running events and finally see the little things Coach Stephens and I have been working on at practice pay off. I didn't have any personal bests but I improved a lot more from the previous week!"
In addition to continuing to improve in the sprinting events, Murray looks to put together a strong performance in the high jump this season. Murray finished the 2018 and 2019 outdoor seasons ranked in the top 30 in the nation in the high jump.
"For the high jump, I'm really just hoping to have a good jump day because I haven't had one of those yet. My first meet, I didn't jump for 2 hours after the start of the event, the second meet was bad weather, and this previous week I was running the 4x100. So, just really hoping to get some solid jumps in."
Anderson is set to compete in the two-day HCAC Championships, beginning on April 30 at 3 p.m. in Terre Haute. Murray has her sights set on capturing multiple individual conference titles and a school record.
"My goals for this championship season and conference is to have two first-place finishes in the 200 and high jump and possibly in the 100-meter dash. I would also like to strive to break a school record in the 200, currently set at 25.28. I believe. It's a very recent goal, as of last week actually, but something to work towards for sure!"
