The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse battled past the Anderson University women's lacrosse team with an 18-9 victory on Sunday at Macholtz Stadium.
Wisconsin-La Crosse (1-3) seized a 20-9 advantage in draw controls to outshoot the Ravens (0-2) by a 39-19 margin.
"Lacrosse is one of those rare sports that the scoring team has the opportunity to get the ball back immediately through a draw," Coach Colin McSharar said. "So essentially, the game could be make it, take it. That's exactly what happened [on Sunday]. Both teams did well offensively. But UW-La Crosse won twice as many draws. That was the difference."
The Eagles cleared 17-of-21 (81.0 percent) attempts while the Ravens finished 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) clears.
"We did make some mistakes again [on Sunday], but we cleaned it up after [Saturday]. I'm proud of that. Our clearing was better than [Saturday]. We still have a few things that we need to work on, but I'm optimistic about our success in the near future. We're getting better every day; that's all I can ask for. The wins will come."
Madison Leonard saved 17 of the 35 shots she faced. The freshman goalkeeper from Flower Mound, Texas collected six ground balls and collected three caused turnovers.
"Madison had a great game between the pipes. She made some saves she had no business making. UW-La Crosse could shoot well and she made some key saves."
Mallory Housman totaled four points on three goals and an assist. The sophomore midfielder from Evansville notched three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
"I think Mallory played her best game as a Raven. She led the team in goals, points, shots, ground balls, and caused turnovers."
Emily Albert picked up three ground balls.
"Emily also played a solid game on defense. She has greatly improved since last year."
Elizabeth Graham netted three goals for the Ravens. Samantha Huber contributed two goals, six draw controls and three ground balls. Kaitlyn Lawson provided a goal and an assist.
Huber, Graham and Housman each produced totals of five shots and four shots on goal. Lawson registered three shots and two shots on goal. Katie Essick put her only shot on frame.
Anderson challenges Heidelberg University (3-0) on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio.
