The Anderson University men's swimming and diving team took fifth place in the four-day Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Championships, which concluded on Saturday in Terre Haute.
Reid Haney captured first place in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 16 minutes, 19.31 seconds. He became the first athlete in program history of either gender to win conference in a swimming event. Anderson women's diver Halle Strege '23 and Anderson men's diver Matthew Hayward '24 have each earned conference titles in diving events.
The Ravens broke nine school records, set 24 personal records and turned in an additional five season bests.
COACH NATHAN MANLEY'S COMMENTS
- The team dealt with a lot of adversity this year and conference turned out to be no different. Nevertheless, the group stayed positive and rallied together for some really good swimming.
- I'm really proud of the character of the team and I think we have the potential to build on this success in the next couple of years.
- That has to be one of the better performances by a group of guys who ended the meet with six active swimmers. It's exciting to think what that group can do with some better health in the future.
- Reid Haney came into the program with a 17:00 mile and a 4:53 500. In three years at AU, he's dropped 41 seconds in his mile and 15 seconds in the 500. I think that's a testament to the program's ability to continue to develop good swimmers.
- You also have to appreciate the effort of several swimmers to find a way to score for the team, stepping outside their normal and favorite events to make an impact, which include Thinh Tran (1,650), Callie Manley (400 IM), Ethan Scialabba (200 back), Abbie Corbly (500).
- The seniors had a good meet. Ben Hall ended up breaking all three men's butterfly records and was a beast on our men's relays as well. Maddie Hopp finished third in the mile. Maddie Adams, Lauryn Shane and Abbie Corbly all had season-best swims and scored points for the Ravens. We'll have future success because of the impact these five had on our program's character and competitiveness.
REID HANEY'S COMMENTS
What a great way to end the season! This meet had some of my best races and incredible competition. I'm beyond grateful to have won the mile and to have placed third in the 500, but even more thankful for the teammates, coaches, and competitors who made this season so special. GBGR.
