Anderson Outscores IUPUI in Second Half of Exhibition
NCAA Division I's IUPUI fights past the Anderson University men's basketball team with a 72-55 victory during Monday's exhibition at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.
Â
Monday's matchup counted towards IUPUI's record as the Jaguars improved to 1-2 on the season. IUPUI started off with a 49-29 lead at halftime. Anderson then limited the Jaguars to 23 points in the second half while outscoring them by three points.
Â
"We have some big positives coming out of the game [on Monday]," Coach Owen Handy said. "I thought our progress defensively from the first to the second half in terms of our commitment to helping and rotation was vastly improved. We have a team with a lot of people in new roles and I think we are growing into those roles. That is not a linear process, but as a global evaluation, we competed at a much higher level than we did in our scrimmage a week ago."
Â
The Ravens are willing to utilize opportunities to face opponents like IUPUI to learn and prepare for the regular season.
Â
"We have played two really good opponents in our two preseason games. The benefit of that is it exposes our weaknesses and shows us where we need to improve as a team."
Â
IUPUI held Anderson to 22-of-68 (32.4 percent) shooting from the field and 4-of-24 (16.7 percent) shooting from 3-point range.
Â
"We take too many bad shots at the offensive end of the floor. That needs to continue to be an area of improvement for us."
Â
Dalton DuBois (Plainfield, Ind./Cascade) led the Ravens with 17 points. The sophomore from Plainfield converted 7-of-10 (70 percent) shots from the field. Michael Rogers (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Malik Laffoon (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) tallied eight points apiece. Maurice Knight (Frankton, Ind./Frankton) contributed seven points and Jake Gudorf (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) provided six points apiece. Austin Lyons (Anderson, Ind./Lapel), Tate Cooper (Terre Haute, Ind./North) and J.D. Bembry (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) rounded out Anderson's scoring with three points each.
Â
Gudorf pulled down eight rebounds to pace the Ravens. Knight blocked three shots while DuBois added two blocks.
Â
"We have a group that is willing to be coached and that means we have a chance to reach our ability as a team."
Â
Anderson kicks off the regular season with two home contests at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium. The Ravens clash with Adrian College (0-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Anderson then squares off with Kalamazoo College (0-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
