Hornets Top Ravens
Kalamazoo College topped the Anderson University men's basketball team with a 75-68 victory on Saturday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
Â
Anderson's loss follows a 98-75 victory against Adrian College (1-2) on Friday. The Hornets moved to 1-2 on the season with the win.
Â
"We looked like a young team on the second day of a back-to-back," Coach Owen Handy said. "We didn't play with a lot of energy early, but fought back from deficits twice in the first half to go into halftime with a lead. We came out of halftime flat and missed a number of shots at the rim, but fought back again. The resilience we showed was a real positive. For the middle portion of the second half, we hung in there defensively and gave ourselves a change to build a lead, but we really made a lot of bad decisions about the shots we took. And then, trailing down the stretch, we tried to gamble and make plays instead of maintaining defensive discipline."
Â
The Ravens (1-1) returned two starters from last season and continue to progress into their new roles for this season.
Â
"These are marks of a young team. Having the toughness to become more disciplined in the biggest moments is built with time, but it is also built with great practice habits. As a team, we need to start to value the importance of great practice habits, so that we through repetition we can build the toughness and consistency that it takes to fulfill our potential."
Â
Maurice Knight (Frankton, Ind./Frankton) led the Ravens with 18 points. Malik Laffoon (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) posted 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Jake Gudorf (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) also scored 13 points. Dalton DuBois (Plainfield, Ind./Cascade) provided 12 points and drained each of his eight free-throw attempts. Ronny Williams (Anderson, Ind./Liberty Christian) scored six points, Austin Lyons (Anderson, Ind./Lapel) added four points and Michael Rogers (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) rounded out Anderson's scoring with two points. Knight and Rogers both blocked two shots.
Â
"I am disappointed by the loss, but I am not discouraged. Our effort was good, but our decision making was not. We will come back on Monday and continue to work and get better."
Â
The Ravens are scheduled for two games next week. Anderson hosts Calvin University (1-1) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium. The Ravens then challenge Hope College on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Holland, Mich.
