DuBois Racks Up Career-High 22 Points
Anderson University Dalton DuBois (Plainfield, Ind./Cascade) racked up a career-high 22 points during Wednesday's matchup with Trine University in Angola. Maurice Knight (Frankton, Ind./Frankton) also tallied 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Â
Trine (4-2) fended off Anderson (2-4) with a 72-64 victory. After the Ravens made the first basket of the game, the Thunder went on a 19-4 run to gain a 13-point lead. Anderson rallied back with a 22-9 run to tie the game at 28-all in the first half. The Ravens lead 35-34 at halftime.
Â
With 11 minutes left in the second half, Anderson held a 52-51 advantage, but Trine sparked a 14-3 run, which included eight points from Trine's Brent Cox. The Thunder held a 66-55 advantage with 5 minutes, 17 seconds remaining and led by at least six for the remainder of the contest.
Â
"We simply dug ourselves too big a hole out of the gate," Coach Owen Handy said. We did a great job of fighting our way back into the game, but it looked to me like we ran out of gas about midway through the second half. The big thing for us right now has been giving up runs. [Against Trine], we were down 19-6 to start the game. Against Illinois Wesleyan, it was a 26-7 run in the first half. At Hope, it was a 15-3 run early second half. We've just got to iron out our inconsistencies."
Â
The Ravens committed 12 turnovers while the Thunder turned the ball over nine times. Trine secured a 17-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
Â
The Thunder outrebounded the Ravens 40-32. After finishing with an 11-1 advantage on offensive rebounds, Trine shut out Anderson 14-0 on second-chance points.
Â
"Basketball is a game of possessions, and Trine had 13 more possessions than we did due to turnovers and offensive rebounding. It is really hard to win a game when you have 13 less possessions than the other team."
Â
Austin Lyons (Anderson, Ind./Lapel) contributed 10 points for the Ravens. Malik Laffoon (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) added six points. Jake Gudorf (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville), Tate Cooper (Terre Haute, Ind./North) and Michael Rogers (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) each rounded out the Anderson scoring effort with two points. Knight and Laffoon each blocked two shots.
Â
Langston Johnson paced the Thunder with 21 points. Cox posted a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Marcus Winters and Brandan Johnson each produced 10 points.
Â
The Ravens knocked down 22-of-47 (46.8 percent) shots from the field and 3-of-10 (30 percent) attempts from 3-point range. Trine converted 25-of-62 (40.3 percent) attempts from the floor and 8-of-26 (30.8 percent) shots from the perimeter.
Â
Anderson drained 17-of-24 (70.8 percent) from the free-throw line while Trine made 14-of-20 (70 percent) attempts from the charity stripe.
Â
The Ravens open their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) season as they host Transylvania University (3-2, 0-1) on Saturday at 4 p.m. in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
