Ravens Outlast Quakers in Overtime

The Anderson University men's basketball team (4-5, 2-0) outlasted Earlham College (1-7, 0-3) with a 77-73 victory in overtime during Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) matchup in Richmond.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Ravens opened the game with a 7-0 run. Earlham responded with a 7-0 run of its own.
• After a layup from Jaden Terry gave the Quakers an 11-9 lead with 12 minutes, 23 seconds remaining, Earlham would lead for the remainder of the half.
• Leading the Ravens 23-20, the Quakers sparked a 9-0 run. Anderson cut the deficit to 36-31 at halftime.
• Alex Hunt knocked down a 3-pointer with 16:42 left in the second half to cut the lead to 42-40. A layup from Bryson Huckeby would even the score at 42-42 with 15:56 remaining in the half.
• During the next 3:40, there were four lead changes and two ties.
• With the game tied at 53-53, Anderson used an 8-0 run during the next 2:14 to propel to a 61-53 advantage.
• Earlham once again matched Anderson's run to tie the game at 61-61 with 7:51 left in the second half. Casey Keesee knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to close the run.
• The Ravens broke a 64-64 tie with a layup from Huckeby and a 3-pointer from Fred Shropshire. Earlham received 5 points from Keesee to even the score at 69-all with 3:10 to go.
• Tate Ivanyo provided a bucket to give Anderson a 71-69 lead. James Holder produced a bucket-and-1 to put the Quakers ahead 72-71 with 2:34 left in the second half.
• Earlham came up with consecutive defensive stops and Chase Younts made a layup to put the Quakers up 74-71 with 1:13 to go in the half.
• With 47 seconds remaining in the second half, Hunt was fouled in the act of shooting a 2-pointer. Hunt made his first free throw to make the score 74-72. His second attempt was a miss, but Jordan Gadis fought to get offensive rebound. Gadis quickly fed the ball out to Shropshire, Shropshire dished the ball to Ivanyo and Ivanyo drained the three to put the Ravens ahead 75-74.
• Earlham would go ahead 77-75 with 27 seconds left in the half when Terry completed the bucket-and-1.
• Ivanyo got the layup to fall to tie the game at 77-77 with six seconds remaining. Tommy Makabu's attempt to win the game for Earlham came up empty, sending the game into overtime.
• Gadis quickly put the Ravens in the driver's seat by knocked down a three with 4:49 remaining in the overtime period. Anderson would carry its lead into the final minute.
• Terry hit two free throws to cut Earlham's deficit to 84-83 with 27 seconds remaining. Needing to foul, the Quakers sent Camden Smith to the line and he knocked down both free throws.
• Trailing by three with seven seconds remaining, the Quakers found Terry for a 3-point attempt, but his shot was blocked by Hunt.
• Anderson was sent the line for two free throws to ice the game. The Ravens missed both free throws, but Gadis came up with another critical offensive rebound. He made his second free throw to seal an 87-83 win.

• Anderson finished with a 42-26 rebounding advantage.
• The Ravens drained 33-of-55 (60 percent) shots from the floor. Earlham converted 32-of-71 (45.1 percent) attempts from the field.
• The Ravens committed 22 turnovers while the Quakers only turned the ball over nine times. Earlham outscored Anderson 33-10 off turnovers.
• The Quakers hit 10-of-25 (40 percent) shots from 3-point range while Anderson made 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) attempts from behind the arc.
• Anderson closed the contest with six double-digit scorers

COACH CARTER COLLINS'S COMMENTS

I'm really proud of the way our team battled. There were large portions of the game where I didn't think we really executed very well at all, but I thought there were very few moments, if any, where we didn't play our hardest. A sign of a good team is being able to win games even when you don't play your best, so I'm happy with [Saturday's] outcome, while still realizing that we have a number of areas that we can improve on.
