Bio

Owen Handy is entering the 2020-21 season in his ninth season at the helm of the Anderson University men's basketball program.

The Ravens have made the HCAC Tournament in each of the last six seasons. Over the past six seasons, the Ravens have accumulated more conference wins than any six-year period since joining NCAA Division III over 30 years ago. During those six seasons, the Ravens have established Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference records for points in a season, assists in a season, made field goals, made free throws, and free-throw percentage. They finished in the Top-5 in the country in field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage in 2016-17 and 2017-18, leading the country (all-levels) in free-throw percentage (81.4 percent) during the 2017-18 season. The team has received the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award five years on a row. Less than 40 teams across all divisions have earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award five years in a row. Anderson is also the only team in Indiana to receive the honor five consecutive years.

Coach Handy describes his ideal player: “We want players who are mentally tough, committed, and very competitive. They must be academically motivated, and excited about our unique Christian atmosphere. This is not the right place for everybody – but for the right player this is a very special place.”

Handy coached Maurice Knight, who was named the HCAC Defensive Player of the Year during the 2019-20 season. During Handy's tenure, the Ravens have totaled 16 all-conference recipients, six first-team all-conference selections and one national team-of-the-week selection.

Handy has mentored the school’s three all-time leading scorers in the Division III era (Trevor Lucas, 1,522; Cole Hartman, 1,491; Stanley Duncan 1,426), the single-season scoring average record-holder (Phil Hogan, 25.5), the single-game scoring record holder (Hogan, 55) and six of the top 12 in career three-pointers made (Nathaniel Acree, Brett Anderson, Duncan, Lucas, Hogan, and Max Mollaun).

Handy has worked numerous basketball camps and clinics around the world, including L’Arcada, a basketball camp in Cataluña, Spain. Among the highlights of his career is having the opportunity to be involved with G.O. Ministries in the Dominican Republic, working alongside former player and current missionary Kyle Bradley. As a freshman in college, Handy coached Bradley’s eighth grade basketball team.

Handy came to Anderson from Wheaton College, where he served as an assistant coach for the Thunder for nine seasons under Mike Schauer and Bill Harris. During his tenure at Wheaton, the Thunder had a 72 percent winning percentage (177-69), five NCAA tournament appearances, and three Sweet 16 appearances. He was a part of recruiting or coaching five All-Americans, six Academic All-Americans, seven Josten’s Trophy finalists, and one national player of the year.

The Holland, Michigan native played varsity basketball as a prep at Holland High School for Coach Mark Werley, graduating from the school in 1999. He double-majored at Wheaton in Political Science and History and holds a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Aurora University. He worships at East Side Church of God.
