The Anderson University baseball team dropped close games to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Spalding University on Saturday in Louisville, Ky.
Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0), ranked No. 17 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll, used a five-run ninth inning to capture a 7-6 victory against the Ravens (0-2). Spalding, which is receiving votes in the national preseason poll, earned a 4-2 victory against Anderson in the nightcap.
"We win 15 innings against two really good teams, but the three innings we lost stuck us with two losses," Coach Mathew Bair said. "We did a lot of things really good and pitching and defense gave us chances to win both games, all of which is very positive. Several players stepped up with some key players out of our lineup."
GAME 1: #17 WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER 7, ANDERSON 6
Joe Moran went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs. Chuck Kidd finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Thomas Parker contributed a double and Justin Reed rounded out Anderson's six hits with a single. Grant Thompson drew a bases-loaded walk. Thomas Parker, Hunter Cornelius and Reed each scored runs. Anderson received stolen bases from Moran, Kidd, Leo Marrero, Bennie Day and Reed.
Moran fanned nine batters, issued a walk and gave up an unearned run on three hits in six innings. Andrew Rolfsen also struck out a batter.
The Ravens led Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-2 after eight innings. In the top of the ninth, Wisconsin-Whitewater plated five runs keyed by a three-run triple from Noah Jensen. Anderson put together two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Wisconsin-Whitewater hung on for the win.
GAME 2: SPALDING 4, ANDERSON 2
Thompson provided a double and a run. Thomas Parker and Moran rounded out Anderson's three hits with singles. Adam Paschal and Jason Hall-Manley each tallied RBIs while T.J. Price scored a run. Thomas Parker and Moran each swiped a base.
Kennedy Parker punched out five batters in his start. Jackson Bland fanned four batters, walked zero batters and allowed a run on two hits in two and one-third innings.
