The Anderson University baseball team powered to a sweep against Mount St. Joseph University during Sunday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader at Don Brandon Field.
Anderson (13-10, 5-1) came from behind with a 13-9 victory in Game 1. The Ravens shut out the Lions (9-16, 1-7) by a score of 11-0 on Game 2.
GAME 1: ANDERSON 13, MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 9
In the bottom of the first inning, Charlie Jones led off with a home run.
Mount St. Joseph poured in six runs during the third to take a 6-1 lead. Tyrell Anderson singled in a run to tie the game. Max Kline and Caleb Partin each ripped two-run doubles. Matt Brankamp then scored on a wild pitch.
Tyler Smitherman smacked a solo home run in the fourth. T.J. Price then doubled in a run to cut the lead to 6-3.
Zach McKenna provided an RBI double for the Lions in the fifth. A solo shot from Joshua Hagans in the sixth put the Lions ahead 8-3.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Ravens began to chip away. Grahm Reedy belted an RBI triple. Price and Connor Gordon cracked run-scoring single to trim the lead to 8-6.
Jake Lawson singled in a run in the seventh to add a run for Mount St. Joseph.
In the bottom half of the inning, Smitherman singled in a run. Price smashed a three-run bomb to put Anderson ahead 10-9.
During the eighth, Anderson added three more runs. Justin Reed and Smitherman each produced RBI doubles while Jake Stank added an RBI single.
Price went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and five RBI's. Smitherman provided a double, a homer and three RBI's, while going 3-for-5. Reedy went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple while Brady Reed and Gordon each finished 2-for-4. Justin Reed went 2-for-5 with an RBI double while Stank finished 2-for-5. Jones contributed a homer while Jed Downham rounded out Anderson's 18 hits with a single.
Evan Doan (3-0) secured the win in relief. He struck out six batters, issued one walk and allowed three runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings. Logan Nickel picked up his second save of the season. He fanned two batters and gave up two hits in two scoreless innings. Walker Stull punched out three batters, yielded two walks and surrendered six runs on five hits in two and one-third innings.
GAME 2: ANDERSON 11, MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 0
Downham contributed an RBI double to put the Ravens on the board in the first.
Reedy scored another run in the second after Brady Reed reached on an error. In the same inning, Jones drove in Brady Reed on a fielder's choice.
Stank provided a solo home run in the fourth to put Anderson ahead 4-0.
Price ripped a solo shot of his own in the sixth.
In the seventh, Stank smashed a grand slam for the Ravens. Stank then produced a two-run double in the eighth.
For the game, Stank powered a double, two homers and seven RBI's, while going 3-for-5 at the plate. Reedy went 2-for-4. Price produced a solo homer and Downham belted a run-scoring double. Justin Reed and Gordon rounded out Anderson's 12 hits with singles.
Kasey Henderson (1-2) locked up the win. He struck out three batters, issued three walks and allowed five hits in seven scoreless innings. Cole Whitlock gave up a hit and a walk in the scoreless inning he pitched while Jose Olivo struck out a batter and yielded a walk in the scoreless inning he pitched.
