Anderson (1-2) opened the season with tough schedule in facing the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-1) and Spalding (2-2) during the weekend. Wisconsin-Whitewater is ranked No. 17 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) preseason poll and Spalding is receiving votes in the national preseason poll.
On Saturday, the Ravens led Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-2 after eight innings, but a five-run ninth guided Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 7-6 victory. Spalding then fought off Anderson with a 4-2 victory.
"Baseball is a crazy game," Coach Mathew Bair said. "We won 24 innings this weekend, lost only three innings and came away 1-2. That said, we won the most important one, the last one. It was a great effort all of the way around to finish the weekend.
M.J. Furnish went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs. The junior catcher from Fishers smashed a three-run homer and a double.
Justin Reed went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs. The freshman middle infielder from Martinsville blasted a two-run jack.
Jonathan Willoughby connected on four doubles, going 4-for-4. The senior third baseman from Speedway plated three runs.
Joe Moran went 2-for-3 with a solo shot and a double. He totaled two RBIs and a run.
Jason Hall-Manley cranked a pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth.
Grant Thompson went 2-for-5 with a double. Bennie Day rounded out Anderson's 16 hits with a single. T.J. Price drove in two runs. Thompson, Day and Grahm Reedy each scored runs.
The Ravens received stolen bases from Thomas Parker, Chuck Kidd, Day and Price.
Kasey Henderson (1-0) earned the win for the Ravens. He struck out three batters, issued two walks and gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings. In two-thirds of an inning, Chandler Wise fanned two batters, yielded two walks and allowed zero runs. Walker Stull threw a perfect inning. Zach Lane punched out two batters, gave up a walk and conceded an unearned run in one inning.
The Ravens are scheduled for two games on Saturday in Berea, Ohio. Anderson faces off with Baldwin Wallace University (0-0), which is receiving votes nationally, at 9 a.m. The Ravens then challenge No. 5 Heidelberg University (0-0) at 12 p.m.
