Anderson Fights to Draw with Wilmington
The Anderson University men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Wilmington College on Saturday at the AU Soccer Fields.
Â
"Going into the game, we knew we would have an uphill battle ahead of us as Wilmington is so very well coached and has so much talent," Coach Scott Fridley said. "Given the fight we had, while dealing with some serious injuries and playing without a few starters, I couldn't be prouder of that 110 minutes from the boys."
Â
Ian Molfenter contributed a goal for the Quakers (7-2-1) assisted by Zach Burgmeier 28 minutes into the match. Daniel Collins (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) netted the equalizer for the Ravens (3-6-1) during the 69th minute of the match. Derek Thorpe (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) provided the assist.
Â
Collins led the Ravens with four shots, including one shot on goal. Race Williams (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) contributed two shots, including a shot on goal. R.J. Macomber (Marion, Ind./Marion) tallied two shots while Chase Litzke (Plain City, Ohio/Fairbanks) and Evan Baurle (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) added shots.
Â
Caleb Oliver (Marion, Ind./Marion) served as Anderson's goalkeeper for 110 minutes and saved three of the four shots he faced. Chase Litzke (Plain City, Ohio/Fairbanks) and Nick Martin (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) each led the Ravens with three steals while Martin and Oliver paced Anderson with six interceptions.
Â
The Ravens have battled a series of tough opponents to prepare for the conference season.
Â
"I think it was a good game going into our conference opener next week. We have run the boys thru the gauntlet of high-quality teams and tonight we saw some pieces of the puzzle fall into place because of that."
Â
Anderson opens the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) season with Transylvania University (3-5) next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.
