Matthews arrived at Anderson in the Fall of 1998 from Bluffton, Ohio. He competed in soccer for four years, playing in 74 games and starting in 69. As a sophomore, Matthews produced nine points behind one goal and seven assists. He led the team with 39 corner kicks.
As a junior, Matthews helped lead the Ravens to a regular-season and conference-tournament titles. He dished out 13 assists for 13 points, which ties for third in school history for most assists in a season. Matthews also broke the single-match assist record with four. He garnered all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) honors.
During his senior year, Matthews led the Ravens with six assists, 40 steals and 49 corner kicks. He notched 16 points behind five goals and six assists. Matthews earned all-HCAC honors for the second consecutive year and was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-Region Player. He set another single-match school record, tallying 12 corner kicks in a match.
During his career, Matthews racked up 5,849 minutes, six goals, 28 assists, 40 points, 94 steals, 76 intercepts, 98 shots and 122 corner kicks. He currently ranks third in school history in assists and ninth in school history in steals.
