The Anderson University women's soccer team hit the road to take on the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. Rose-Hulman outlasted Anderson with a 1-0 victory during Wednesday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) contest.
"I was extremely pleased with how we played," Coach Jennifer Myhre said. "We came with energy and intensity, stepping strong defensively as a team and having a collective mindset to attack. We played quick and simple, finding some good runs into the box."
During the 90 minutes of play, the Ravens' (3-4, 3-4) defense held strong against the Fightin' Engineers' (7-1, 7-1) offense. Through the first half, the Ravens were able to hold the Fightin' Engineers to eight shots, while the Ravens took four. Neither team was able to capitalize on their goal scoring opportunities as they headed into halftime tied 0-0.
It would take until the 84th minute of play before the ball would find the back of the net. The goal went in favor of the Fightin' Engineers as Mariah Mufich took the shot. The Ravens attempted to tie the game up, but it was saved and time was ticking away.
In the end, the Fightin' Engineers pulled away with the one goal victory. The Ravens were outshot 21-to-7, but goalkeeper Elizabeth Graham (Riverside, Ohio/Carroll) made nine crucial saves to keep them in the game and the score close.
"Elizabeth had a great performance and came up with some key saves to keep us in the game."
Jessica Pulaski (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Corissa Horton (Fountaintown, Ind./Triton Central) led the Ravens with two shots each, both of Horton's were on frame.
"Soccer is a game of chances and unfortunate that they slipped one in and we had some close ones ourselves. I was proud of our fight and effort and look forward to continuing this mindset as we head into Friday's game."
The Ravens will close out the 2020-21 HCAC regular season play on Friday as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Lions of Mount St. Joseph University (3-3, 3-3). Kickoff is set for 1p.m.
