The Anderson University women's soccer team fell short to Indiana Tech by a score of 4-2 in Wednesday's opening game of the 2021-22 season. Wednesday's non-conference competition took place at home on the AU Women's Soccer Practice Field.
"[Wednesday] was a lot to take away and grow from," Coach Jennifer Myhre said. "Despite the score, there were quality minutes and close chances in the attack. Once we got into a rhythm after the first few minutes, our build up to the goals were fantastic."
Anderson (0-1) was hot out of the gate, scoring two goals within the first 12 minutes of play. Taylor Fort (Pendleton, Ind. / Pendleton Heights) netted the first goal of the game off a Harper Manion (Lebanon, Ohio / Bishop Fenwick) assist just eight minutes and thirty-six seconds after the opening whistle. Manion followed with a goal of her own just two minutes later, making it a 2-0 game for the Ravens. Manion was assisted by Brooke Neu (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota West).
"Our forward runs and ability to get the numbers into the box and find the final pass was great. Not only were the finishes by Taylor and Harper disciplined, but the combinations that led up to them are exactly how we want to move the ball."
At the 30-minute mark, the Warriors (2-0) Molly Ames found the back of the net for her first goal of the game. After back-and-forth battles in the midfield, the Warriors were able to break away and tie the game up 2-2 in the 40th minute with a goal by Lily Rothert. The Ravens and Warriors headed into halftime all tied up.
Coming out of the half, the Warriors continued their goal scoring streak. Danielle Dunn made it a 3-2 game. The Ravens continued to fight hard against the Warriors, applying pressure offensively and defensively. Anderson went on to control part of the game and take five shots between the 57th and 76th minute, but were unable to find the back of the net. Indiana Tech's Molly Ames secured her second goal of the game in the 79th minute, growing their lead to 4-2. With time ticking down, the Ravens would take three more chances, but ultimately fell short to the Warriors.
Overall, the Ravens outshot the Warriors 16-10, with Taylor Fort and Harper Manion each recording four a piece. Starting goalkeeper Mallory Housman (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial) recorded four saves.
The Ravens are now set to host St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (0-1) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12PM on the AU Soccer Fields.
"Early games are learning tools to see where we need to adjust and know we will tighten things on the defensive end and be ready for Saturday."
