Anderson Suffers Loss in Season Opener
The Anderson University women's basketball team suffered a 49-59 loss to Ohio Northern University at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Â
"Ohio Northern is a tough basketball team with a history of success and an expectation of winning," Coach Lindsay Shade said. "They made more of the gritty, winning plays than we did."
Â
Ohio Northern (1-0) put together a 47-32 rebounding advantage, including a 19-10 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Polar Bears outscored the Ravens 19-8 on second-chance points.
Â
"I was pleased with our half court defensive effort, but we gave up 19 offensive rebounds and 18 second-chance points. We have to be mentally and physically tough enough to box out at the end of a defensive possession. Right now, we are not consistently doing that and will keep chipping away at it."
Â
Payton Moore (Spiceland, Ind./Tri) led the Ravens with 13 points. The sophomore from Spiceland converted 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) shots from the free-throw line. Hanna Ault (Pennville, Ind./Jay County) contributed 12 points. Lexi Dellinger (Berne, Ind./South Adams) turned in 11 points. Tatum Minier (Delphi, Ind./Delphi Community) provided five points. Carly Hackler (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Ryleee Morris scored three points apiece while Hannah Hawkins (Fairmount, Ind./Madison-Grant) rounded out Anderson's scoring with two points. Hawkins also posted team-highs of three blocks and seven rebounds. Dellinger dished out four assists.
Â
Anderson and Ohio Northern both turned the ball over 13 times. The Ravens limited themselves to four turnovers in the second half.
Â
"I am encouraged by the way we took care of the ball, especially in the second half."
Â
The Ravens battle in the Wilmington Tournament this weekend in Wilmington, Ohio. Wilmington College (0-0) squares off with Miami University-Middletown (1-2) on Friday at 6 p.m. Anderson then clashes with Denison University (1-0) on Friday at 8 p.m. The second round is scheduled for Saturday with the third-place game at 1 p.m. and the championship game at 3 p.m.
Â
"It's a quick turn-around for us as we head into the Wilmington tournament. We will learn from tonight and grow from this experience, with two more opportunities this weekend."
