The Anderson University women's basketball team could not overcome its turnovers and suffered a 65-58 loss to Manchester University during Wednesday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) matchup in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
Anderson (5-7, 1-4) committed 24 turnovers while Manchester (6-6, 3-2) turned the ball over only 10 times. The Spartans capitalized on Anderson's turnovers by outscoring the Ravens 23-8 off turnovers.
Anderson took a hit early in the second quarter when Lexi Dellinger had to leave the game with an injury. Dellinger entered the game leading the Ravens with an average of 15.1 points.
"Losing Lexi early in the second quarter had a significant impact on the game," Coach Lindsay Shade said. "She is so much more than our leading scorer and we struggled without her poise and leadership. After showing significant improvements in our ability to handle pressure, we have had back-to-back games with 24 turnovers and significant discrepancies in shot attempts."
The Spartans held a 54-42 advantage in shot attempts. Manchester also turned 27 Anderson fouls into 32 Manchester free throws.
"Because of our size advantage, I was concerned about our ability to defend without fouling. We can't afford to put teams to the free throw line 32 times. We are going to have to go back to the drawing board and clean things up before we face a tough and physical Franklin team on Saturday."
Payton Moore dropped 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, leading the Ravens in both categories. Hannah Hawkins also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kristin Dubois turned in 11 points and three steals. Hanna Ault provided five points and four assists. Jade Shipley rounded out Anderson's scoring with three points.
The Ravens converted 18-of-42 (42.9 percent) shots from the field and 3-of-9 (33.3 percent) attempts from 3-point range. Manchester hit 22-of-54 (40.7 percent) shots from the floor and 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) attempts from the perimeter.
The Spartans drained 19-of-32 (59.4 percent) shots from the free-throw line while the Ravens made 19-of-29 (65.5 percent) attempts from the charity stripe.
Anderson hosts Franklin College (7-4, 3-2) for an HCAC matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m. in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
