The Big Red Fights Past Anderson in Wilmington Tournament
Denison University fought past the Anderson University women's basketball team with a 71-47 win during Round 1 of the Wilmington Tournament on Friday in Wilmington, Ohio.
Â
"Denison is a really solid and veteran basketball team," Coach Lindsay Shade said. "They have 10 seniors on their roster and were picked preseason second in the North Coast Athletic Conference."
Â
After finishing minus-15 in rebounding against Ohio Northern University (1-0), Anderson (0-2) gathered 26 rebounds and finished minus-6 on the boards against Denison (2-0).
Â
The Big Red shut down Anderson's offense as the Ravens racked up 26 turnovers. Denison committed just 10 turnovers and outscored the Ravens 19-7 off turnovers.
Â
"Against Ohio Northern, we struggled to finish possessions with a defensive rebound. I felt like we did a much better job of defensive rebounding today. However, we had way too many unforced turnovers that led to points in transition and a very large discrepancy in shot attempts."
Â
Hanna Ault (Pennville, Ind./Jay County) led the Ravens with 12 points. Lexi Dellinger (Berne, Ind./South Adams) provided 11 points. Payton Moore (Spiceland, Ind./Tri) turned in eight points and Hannah Hawkins (Fairmount, Ind./Madison-Grant) contributed six points. Jade Shipley (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) produced four points. Rylee Morris (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) and Kaitlynn Anzel (West Chester, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) scored two points each while Mariah Clemons (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) rounded out Anderson's scoring with one point. Carly Hackler (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) tallied a team-high six rebounds.
Â
"I am encouraged because I felt like we got better [on Friday]. Playing tough opponents exposes areas and weakness. We know the things we need to work on and our growth as a team will be fun to track over the course of the season. [Saturday] brings another opportunity for us to continue improving."

Anderson battles Miami University-Middletown (1-3) in the third-place game of the Wilmington Tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m.
